Applications Of Variable Frequency Drives In Wastewater Plants

VFD Distributors In Mississauga

AC gear motors and variable frequency drives are used in numerous industrial applications such as manufacturing, HVAC systems, wastewater treatment and management, and much more. In this blog, Bauer GMC will explore how VFD, also known as variable speed drives, aids wastewater treatment plants in conserving energy and protecting numerous pieces of equipment.

What Is A VFD?

A variable frequency drive or VFD helps in controlling the speed and torque of an AC gear motor. This has many advantages in industrial settings as it helps generate maximum torque and power with minimal energy consumption.

Role Of VFD In Wastewater Management

There are two main pieces of equipment in such a facility, a blower and a submersible pump.

- The blower is responsible for sending in compressed air into the aeration tank. This is mainly done to increase the oxygen content in the tank and help the microorganisms to better break down the contaminants in the sewage. A typical starting and stopping of a blower takes a significant amount of electricity and can even cause power outages and fluctuations. With a VFD, however, the speed of the fan within the blowers can be controlled easily, thereby reducing electricity demands and ensuring optimal energy usage.

- Similar to a blower, the starting and stopping of a submersible pump can lead to a phenomenon known as a water hammer, which can eventually rupture pipes connected to the pumps. With a variable speed drive/VFD, however, the pump can be soft-started and stopped, thereby reducing energy demands and preventing shocks that can damage pipes and motors.

Therefore, VFD is critical for AC gear motors and pumps in a water treatment plant.
